Alco's Breeding Values and Linear Scores
Linear scoring is a method used to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a horse across various traits. This assessment covers 35 different traits, with scores ranging from 88 to 112. The closer the score is to 112, the better the horse performs in that particular trait (some scores may even exceed 112). Conversely, scores closer to 88 indicate weaker performance in that area. A score of 100 is considered average.
Mare owners should select stallions based on the weaknesses observed in their mares. By referring to the scores listed below, you can make informed decisions to produce foals that do not inherit those weaknesses. If your mare has already been assessed and has recorded scores, you can use them to make a more precise decision. Generally, scores below 100 require more attention to improve the quality of the foal. In each breeding attempt, it’s advisable to focus on 2 to 3 significant weaknesses in the mare to improve in the foal.
How to Use This Table:
Suppose your mare has noticeable weaknesses in the length of trot, power of trot, and balance, with scores below 100. In this case, you should choose a stallion that scores above 100 in these traits. Add the stallion’s score to your mare’s score, then divide by 2 to determine the expected improvement in the foal.
Example:
If your mare scores 92 in trot length and the stallion you select scores 108, the combined score would be 200. Dividing this by 2 gives a score of 100, indicating an improvement of 8 points in the foal’s trot length compared to the mare.
